Wayne Kurtz, Executive Director at Birmingham Green in Manassas, was named VCALs 2002 Administrator of the Year at the VHCAs Annual Awards Banquet at the Hotel Roanoke on September 17th. He was honored by his peers in recognition of his dedication and creative service to the residents of Birmingham Green and other Virginia seniors and his ongoing focus on helping less affluent residents. Wayne has served perennially on VHCA/VCAL committees and task forces to help address issues and unmet needs related to assisted living, particularly in the areas of improved affordable housing and Auxiliary Grant reimbursement. In making the presentation, Robert DeMaria, last years recipient of the award, cited Waynes decades of service and dedication to the elder population in the Northern Virginia region. Since 1983 Wayne has served in various capacities at Birmingham Green and became Executive Director in 1999. He received a Bachelors in Business Administration from Eastern Mennonite College and his Masters Degree in Health Care Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. His professional experiences include serving as Administrator at Menno-Haven nursing facility in Chambersburg, PA from 1980-1983, as Assistant Administrator at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan, KY from 1976-1980, and as Brigade Accountant and Hospital Business Manager for the Government of Botswana, Africa for three years.
