Busy Summer for Virginia ALFs

This has been an exceptionally busy summer for Virginia assisted living facility (ALF) providers.  In addition to implementing the new Department of Social Services (DSS) regulations and reviewing proposed requirements for Medication Aides, ALF Administrator licensure standards were re-examined at the request of Governor Kaine.  At its July 10th meeting, the Board of Long Term Care Administrators approved a series of changes to the licensure regulations which are now on their way to the Governor for his approval.

The licensure regulation changes were a result of additional public comments and the resulting compromises agreed to by provider organizations on several key areas to address the Governor’s concerns.  Following extensive deliberation by the Board, a decision was made to (1) require a national credentialing examination rather than a state specific exam and (2) allow LPNs and RNs to complete a modified ALF AIT program so long as they hold current unrestricted licenses.  A copy of the draft forwarded to the Governor is available on-line.
